I am participating in the Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta (BBBSMA) this year, because I am committed to helping children facing adversity succeed in school and in life.
Child mentoring is a cause that is near dear to me because growing up, college and professional careers weren't things that were emphasized. We were surrounded by poor school systems and all kinds of delinquency and crime. Both my HS and middle school were schools that failed and got shut down. I thank God I had the support of my family who always pushed me to be more than what I was surrounded by. Not everyone has a strong support system or resources and that's why this organization and this event is important. This event focuses on raising money for the kids who don't qualify for other programs but need mentoring. So I'm asking for any kind of donation because any amount helps us to meet our goals!
In spite of these major risk factors, the impact of BBBSMA’s mentoring programs is extraordinary. Of the children that participated in the program in 2015, 97% were promoted to the next grade, 94% increased their scholastic competence and 98% graduated from high school on time. Children in the program are less likely to engage in risky behaviors and 99% do not become involved in the juvenile justice system.
